History of Omega & LKK Chapter

Fraternity History

Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. is the first international fraternal organization founded on the campus of a historically black college.  On the evening of November 17, 1911, Omega Psi Phi was founded inside the Science Building (later renamed Thirkield Hall) at Howard University located in Washington, D.C. The founders were three undergraduates — Edgar Amos Love, Oscar James Cooper and Frank Coleman. Joining them was their faculty adviser, Ernest Everett Just.  From the initials of the Greek phrase meaning, “Friendship is Essential to the Soul“, the name Omega Psi Phi was derived. That phrase was selected as the motto.  Manhood, Scholarship, Perseverance and Uplift were adopted as Cardinal Principles.

Chapter History

In the Spring of 1995, a group of 33 loyal dedicated Omega Men decided it was time to charter a new chapter of the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Many of these brothers were members of the Lambda Alpha graduate chapter. Others were transitioning from the lota Kappa intermediate chapter and various undergraduate chapters across the nation.  Although this was an exciting time for the brothers, they were met with much resistance. However, they refused to be denied as they stepped out on faith and let Omega be their guide. The initial planning meetings were held at various brothers' houses. Brother Bradford Edwards chaired many of the initial meetings with the help of Brother Michael Jones. Brothers Kevin Rolle, Robert Tucker, and Michael Adams used their political influence to network and navigate the Charter approval process.

On December 7, 1995, the 890th Chapter of the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. was chartered and given the name Lambda Kappa Kappa Chapter (LKK). This chapter was the vision of 33 Noble Men.
